Our TRANSCENDENT Authors: a Featured Interview with Claire Davon

In our new author series, we’ll be offering a clairvoyant peek behind the veil of who and what makes up TRANSCENDENT. Here’s a glimpse at Claire Davon and her story “The Only One Alive.”

ABOUT THE STORY

What inspired your story?

It’s something that I’ve wondered for a long time. How do we actually know that other people are alive? We have the evidence all around us in the form of other beings that move and things that happen while we are sleeping, but do we ever really know? I took that and ran with it to its logical (to me) extreme.

Did you have to do any research? If so, what kind? What did you learn?

No research needed, it is all modern day stuff that I am quite familiar with.

Can you tell me a little bit about your protagonist?

Richard is a bit of a mess. His life isn’t working, his girlfriend left him, he’s basically alone and worst of all—he doesn’t know if anyone else is really there!

Tell me about the setting you chose and how it influences your work.

I wanted it to be a city environment, which I felt highlighted the essential loneliness of Richard, who is surrounded by people and yet is alone.

Which phrase are you most proud of in this story?

“Was I forever going to be in a world where I couldn’t multitask anything?”

If your story was front-page news, what would the headline be?

In a world full of people, Richard thinks he is the only one alive.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Claire Davon bio photo

What was the best money you ever spent as a writer?

Joining trade groups (RWA and HWA). Being in the company of other writers and taking their available courses/lectures helps me hone my craft as a writer and makes me better every day.

If you had to put your name on someone else’s book/story, which would it be and why?

Dragonflight by Anne McCaffrey. This book shaped my teenage years and helped cement my desire to be a writer. Anne McCaffrey was a pioneer of her time and created a rich, vibrant world that I wanted to live in. If there had been a Kindle Worlds set on Pern, I would have written in it.

When did you decide to take writing seriously?

On and off for over a decade, but I went back seriously six years ago.

If you could choose a single superpower, what would it be and why?

Invisibility. OH, THE POSSIBILITIES!!

Transcendent - Amazon KindleClaire can’t remember a time when writing wasn’t part of her life. Growing up, she used to write stories with her friends. As a teenager she started reading fantasy and science fiction, but her diet quickly changed to romance and happily-ever-after’s.

A native of Massachusetts and cold weather, she left all that behind to move to the sun and fun of California, but has always lived no more than twenty miles from the ocean.

In college she studied acting with a minor in creative writing. In hindsight she should have flipped course studies. Before she was published, she sold books on eBay and discovered some of her favorite authors by sampling the goods, which was the perfect solution. Claire has many book-irons in the fire, most notably her urban fantasy series, The Elementals’ Challenge series, but writes contemporary and shifter romances as well as.

While she’s not a movie mogul or actor, she does work in the film industry with her office firmly situated in the 90210 district of Hollywood. Prone to breaking into song, she is quick on her feet and just as quick with snappy dialogue. In addition to writing she enjoys animal rescue, reading, and movies. She loves to hear from fans, so feel free to drop her a line.
